Rick Spielman thinks Vikings should trade former third-round pick

It’s been no secret that Alexander Mattison has been the subject of trade discussions amongst the fanbase.

While he has been a stalwart backup to Dalvin Cook, there is something to be desired from the fourth-year pro from Boise State. His well-rounded skillset is desirable but already being at his ceiling with only being at best a spot starter raises questions about his future.

This preseason, Kene Nwangwu and Ty Chandler both secured roster spots with their excellent play out of the backfield and Nwangwu’s ability as a kick returner.

The interesting thing with Mattison is the financial aspect. The Vikings would save $185,291 by moving on from him and keeping rookie fifth-round pick Ty Chandler.

In a recent article for The 33rd Team, former Vikings general manager Rick Spielman believes that the Vikings should trade him to the Philadelphia Eagles.

“The Eagles need a big, physical back to team up with Kenneth Gainwell and Boston Scott,” wrote Spielman. “Miles Sanders is currently dealing with a hamstring injury and has had durability problems the past two years. Mattison is in the final year of his contract, and Minnesota has two young backs in Kene Nwangwu and Ty Chandler to add depth behind Dalvin Cook.”

The move makes a lot of sense and it would give the Vikings an asset for a player and make their cuts just a little bit easier.

Kwesi Adofo-Mensah, let’s make a deal.
