Former University of Hawaii football coach Greg McMackin passed away on Tuesday at age 77, according to his family.
McMackin served as the defensive coordinator during Hawaii's undefeated season in 2007, during which they went 12-0 and went to the Sugar Bowl. He was named as the team's head coach following the departure of June Jones in 2008, spending four seasons at the helm of the Rainbow Warriors.
He resigned as head coach at Hawaii back in 2011, agreeing to a buyout worth a reported $600,000, according to Hawaii News Now.
In all, McMackin coached football for more than 40 years, with a career spanning from 1968-2011.
His granddaughter, Kayla, confirmed the news via a Twitter post, in which she indicated that McMackin had passed peacefully on Tuesday.
In addition to his well-known tenure at Hawaii, McMackin had several other coaching stops throughout his long career in football, making stops in the NFL, and USFL, as well as the college and high school levels.
He served as the head coach at Oregon Tech from 1986-1989, and was the defensive coordinator at some prominent college programs, including Utah, Texas Tech, and Miami. Additionally, McMackin was the Seahawks defensive coordinator for four seasons, and also spent three seasons as the linebackers coach for the 49ers from 2003-05.
