A former University of Kentucky student has pleaded guilty to assault charges after a disturbing incident on campus in 2022. Sophia Rosing admitted to four counts of fourth-degree assault, one count of disorderly conduct, and one count of alcohol intoxication in Fayette County Circuit Court. Her attorney, Fred Peters, confirmed the plea agreement, which also saw a felony charge of third-degree assault dropped.
During a mediation session in court, both parties had the opportunity to apologize and express their feelings face-to-face. Kylah Spring, the Black student who was targeted with racial slurs by Rosing, shared that the incident did not break her spirit. She expressed her resilience and forgiveness towards Rosing, emphasizing that her spirit remained unbroken.
Fayette Commonwealth’s Attorney Kimberly Baird recommended a sentence of up to 12 months for the assault charges, to be served concurrently, along with 100 hours of community service and a $25 fine. Additionally, discussions are underway for Rosing to participate in a public service announcement about the dangers of drinking, as suggested by Spring.
The sentencing for Rosing is scheduled for October 17, 2024, at 1 p.m. The incident, captured on video, gained widespread attention, leading to Rosing's suspension and subsequent permanent ban from the university campus.
