Former Trump campaign aide labels Biden's strategies to win Latinos back "a Hail Mary"

Bryan Lanza, a former campaign aide for Donald Trump, went on CNN This Morning to criticize Joe Biden's recent executive order to allow undocumented immigrants married to American citizens to remain apply for green cards without leaving, labeling it "a Hail Mary" and claiming skepticism about its potential political benefit:

"He's underwater with immigration and he's losing a lot of ground with Latinos, so it's a Hail Mary to try to bring them back. Because the last three years his economic activities, his economic messages, economic deliveries have been a failure to Latino communities, specifically working-class Latinos and middle-class Latinos, so he needs something, he needs — he needs a Hail Mary, and this is it."

Biden announced the executive order on Tuesday. It grants undocumented immigrants married to U.S. citizens the ability to stay in the United States legally, obtain work permits, and eventually pursue a pathway to legal status as long as they have lived in the country for at least ten years.

This initiative aims to address some immigration issues and potentially bolster Biden's standing with Hispanic voters, a demographic where his support has seen significant erosion. It can also be seen as a balancing act following another executive action cracking down on asylum-seeking at the southern border.

Lanza argued that Biden's new policy is unlikely to reverse his declining popularity among Hispanic voters: "I don't think it's going to be enough, because I think Latinos have passed judgment on Joe Biden with respect to how he helps them economically, and he doesn't. He's failed them for nearly 36 months in tackling inflation. So he doesn't help them there."

The debate over Biden's immigration policy and its impact on Hispanic voters is likely to continue as both parties strategize for upcoming elections. Republicans on Capitol Hill, for example, tend to view the new policy as validation of their skepticism towards the president's immigration approach.

Speaker Mike Johnson criticized Biden for attempting to appease both sides, asserting that the policy will only incentivize illegal immigration. Others like Rep. Mario Díaz-Balart, questioned the constitutionality of the executive order, while Senator John Cornyn argued that it incentivizes illegal migration by promising eventual pathways to citizenship.

Bryan Lanza was deputy communications director of Donald Trump's presidential transition team which was tasked with vetting, interviewing, and recommending individuals for top cabinet and staff roles in Trump's administration.
