Steve Bannon, former advisor to President Donald Trump, is expected to plead guilty in a deal with New York prosecutors to resolve fraud charges tied to fundraising for a U.S. southern border wall to avoid jail time.
"It is anticipated that Mr. Bannon will plead guilty tomorrow under an agreement with the district attorney and the court that he will not receive a sentence that includes any jail time," Bannon's attorney, John F. Carman, who confirmed the plea arrangement, told Law360.
Bannon was previously indicted in 2022 by the Manhattan district attorney's office over his involvement in the "We Build the Wall" campaign, which raised millions from donors with promises of constructing private sections of a border wall. Prosecutors alleged that Bannon and others misled contributors about how the funds would be used.
Brian Kolfage, a decorated Air Force veteran and co-founder of the campaign, was sentenced to over four years in prison for stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars from donors. Financier Andrew Badolato also received a three-year sentence, while another associate, Tim Shea, received a 63-month sentence. The men were ordered to pay $25 million in restitution, per AP News.
Bannon, who was initially arrested aboard a luxury yacht, avoided federal charges due to a last-minute pardon from Trump. Still, state charges were later filed against him by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg.
Neither Bannon's legal team nor the district attorney's office immediately responded to media requests for further comment.
