Former Tranmere striker dreaming of Liverpool or Everton in FA Cup Third round

A one-time Tranmere centre forward is hoping to fulfil a personal ambition by facing either Liverpool or Everton in the FA Cup third round.

Paul Mullin is currently one of the most prolific strikers outside of the Football League. The Wrexham goal-getter has found the net 19 times this season in just 22 appearances.

That included a hat-trick for the Dragons against Farnborough in the last round of the FA Cup, with a 4-1 home win securing a safe passage into the third round, where a the prospect of Premier League opposition awaits. And Liverpool-born Mullin, who spent two seasons at Tranmere, has got his heart set in a rendezvous with one of the giants of Merseyside football when the draw takes place at Anfield on Monday (November 28).

Speaking to BBC Sport, when asked who he would like to face in the next round, Mullin said: " Liverpool at Anfield or Everton here [at home]. I'd like to play either of those teams but hopefully Liverpool.

"It's been my dream as a kid to walk out at Anfield in a competitive match and hopefully I get to do it. But we'll take whoever we get and try and do our best in the game. If it is a big tie then we can go an enjoy it and if not, we've got to try and win that."

Facing Liverpool would be a career high for Mullin, who once had a loan spell with Vauxhall Motors at the start of his career. But the 28-year-old is no stranger to getting one over Premier League opposition. Whilst playing for Tranmere in 2020, Micky Mellon's side once came back from 3-0 down at Watford to draw 3-3 with Mullin scoring the crucial equaliser from the penalty spot. Rovers would go onto win the replay 2-1 and it was Mullin who headed home the winner in extra time.

After leaving Tranmere, he joined Cambridge United, where his 32 league goals helped clinch automatic promotion to League One in 2021. His exploits led to one of United's stands being name after him, but he caused a shock by then dropping down two divisions to joined Wrexham in the National League.

Mullin has been a big hit at promotion-chasing Wrexham, having scored 52 goals in 68 appearances.
