The NHL Alumni Association announced on Wednesday that former Toronto Maple Leafs winger Sergei Berezin passed away at the age of 52.
Berezin, a Russian native, was selected in the 10th round of the 1994 NHL Draft by the Toronto Maple Leafs and made his league debut two years later. He quickly made a name for himself by scoring 25 goals in his rookie season and earning a spot on the NHL All-Rookie Team.
His standout season came in 1998-99 when he recorded 37 goals, 22 assists, and 59 points, all career highs. Berezin played a crucial role in the Leafs' playoff run that year, contributing six goals and six assists as they reached the Eastern Conference Finals.
One of his most memorable moments was scoring the series-winning goal against the Philadelphia Flyers in the first round of the playoffs.
After his time with the Maple Leafs, Berezin was traded to the Phoenix Coyotes and later played for the Montreal Canadiens, Chicago Blackhawks, and Washington Capitals.
Throughout his career, Berezin scored 126 goals and tallied 94 assists. He also represented the Soviet Union in the 1991 World Juniors, winning a silver medal.
Following his retirement, Berezin found joy in coaching minor hockey, playing tennis, and spending quality time with his family.
The Toronto Maple Leafs expressed their condolences, stating, 'We are incredibly saddened to learn of the sudden passing of Sergei Berezin. Our thoughts are with his family and friends during this difficult time.'
