Former Tesco worker shares 'secret code' meanings on bags of vegetables

An ex-Tesco employee has shared the meaning behind the "secret codes" on products shoppers may spot in stores.

The former supermarket worker, who goes by the alias of @financegirlbargains on social media, has claimed that they made this discovery during staff training for the major store, reports the Daily Record.

The former supermarket employee shared the clip using a packet of mangetout as an example in the video, and showed the codes A3 and A6 - before explaining what numbers actually means. The TikToker captioned the clip: "Tesco staff training taught me the higher the number the fresher the product."

And while the code doesn't show how 'fresh' a product is, the number is in fact used by Tesco to indicate the date of the month the produce was packed.

Tesco, along with several other supermarkets including Asda, Sainsbury's and Lidl, removed 'best before dates' on fresh fruit and vegetables to help reduce waste.

The video has since been liked by almost 30,000 viewers, as comments agreed that the numbers on the front are known as "Julian Code". This means that the letter stands for the month it was packed, and the number is the date.

One TikTok user wrote: "A = January, 6 = 6th. applies to all fruit and veg. A is January, B is February and so on."

Another said: "Julian code. The letter stands for the month & the number is the date. So A = January and 6 is obviously 6th x."

However, not everyone was as knowledgeable as these two on the codes, as some admitted they had been baffled by the use of the letters and numbers on packaging.

One thankful shopper said: "Omg thank you for this."

Another commented: "I had no idea!! thank you for sharing."

One commenter joked: "Every little helps."

Tesco has been contacted for comment on the matter.
