Former swimming pool set for conversion into business hub

A former swimming pool in north Birmingham could be converted into an enterprise hub under newly submitted plans.

Witton Lodge Community Association is behind the project to convert the Erdington Baths building, in Mason Road, into a multi-use site with an emphasis on helping small businesses and entrepreneurs.

There would also be community facilities including a restaurant and café and the scheme would be called Erdington Enterprise and Entrepreneur or E3 Hub, reports BirminghamLive.

The main aim of the project is to provide "affordable, small-scale working and meeting spaces" for local small and medium enterprises as well as for individuals and residents groups.

It would have three self-contained offices, flexible studio spaces and a creche and office pods in the site's main pool hall for co-working, creating 93 new full-time roles.

The site neighbours Erdington Library and is close to the top of the town's High Street.

The baths building, which is almost 100 years old, has remained empty since it closed in 2014 since when it has fallen into a state of disrepair.

The plans have been drawn-up by Intervention Architecture with funds secured from Greater Birmingham and Solihull Local Enterprise Partnership.

Afzal Hussain, chief officer at Witton Lodge Community Association, said: "There is an abundance of research outlining the benefits of co-working spaces including improved connectivity and productivity for individuals and their businesses.

"The hub will positively support the needs of Erdington's current working population and provide opportunities to establish new service provision and activity in the constituency in support of commercial and social enterprise growth.

"We understand that the levels of self-employment and business activity within an area can have a profound effect on local levels of unemployment, income and economic output.

"This is why we are confident an initiative and resource like the Erdington Enterprise Hub will help to evolve both the landscape and infrastructure of business in Erdington, both in the short and long-term.

"It will help to satisfy the growing demand from the local community for opportunities in commercial enterprise."
