Former Swansea City star Wilfried Bony training with new club but some fans really aren't happy about it

Wilfried Bony appears to be on the verge of finally finding himself a new club.

The former Swansea City striker was training with Newport County for much of last year, following his departure from Saudi Arabian side Al-Ittihad towards the end of 2020.

Now, after much deliberation, it appears he may well have found his next employer, with reports in the Netherlands confirming that the Ivorian has been training with Dutch side NEC Nijmegen, with a view to a permanent move.

NEC boss Rogier Meijer is seemingly keen on bringing the 33-year-old on board, but not everyone is quite so enamoured by the idea.

A group of fans have shown their displeasure at the potential move, leaving a banner outside the club's stadium voicing their opposition.

Bony played for NEC's bitter rivals Vitesse Arnhem for two years before leaving for Swansea in 2013, and it's clear his previous affiliations have not been forgotten.

One banner, roughly translates, reads: 'Bony, never in our tricolor', referring to the club's red, black and green strip.

Another simply reads: 'Bony not welcome'.

But boss Meijer seems undeterred, and insists Bony would make a useful addition to his squad.

"I understand the emotions, but we are nine years further," he told VI on Tuesday

"As far as I'm concerned, he's welcome. There were also emotions when Berghuis went from Feyenoord to Ajax. That's how it goes.

“The boys are thrilled to have him here. Wilfried has played in the top of the Premier League at Manchester City.

"That's just beautiful. He has certainly not forgotten about football. He is very strong on the ball, has a good passing and is driven. What are the chances that he will come?

"That opportunity is there."
