Former Super Bowl champ claims Patriots’ coaching staff is on edge

Former New England Patriots safety Devin McCourty doesn’t believe the coaching staff feels like their jobs are automatically safe.

The 2024 season has not gone according to plan for the Patriots’ organization, as they currently sit with a 3-13 record and the No. 1 overall pick of the 2025 NFL draft, if the season ended today.

Jerod Mayo has struggled in his first year as the Patriots head coach, along with members of his coaching staff.

“Just from talking to those guys, I do feel like they feel they’re coaching to make sure that they’re back,” McCourty said on “Up & Adams.” “I don’t think there’s this feeling of, ‘Hey, we’re safe. We’re good.’ I think there is a little bit of a sense of urgency and a edge from everybody there.”

McCourty ultimately expects Mayo to get another shot in New England in 2025, but he also knows how unpredictable things can be in the NFL.

It isn’t out of the realm of possibility that this is a one-and-done season for Mayo and company, depending on what happens in Sunday’s regular season finale against the Buffalo Bills.
