Former Sunderland striker Connor Wickham searching for fourth club in a year

Former Sunderland striker Connor Wickham is on the lookout for a new club. The 30-year-old has been released by the Black Cats' Championship rivals Cardiff City.

Wickham, who signed for Sunderland in a £6m deal from Ipswich Town in 2011, only arrived in Wales in February on a short-term arrangement. He scored just once in 12 appearances.

Prior to that he had enjoyed a goalscoring renaissance, hitting nine in 20 for Forest Green Rovers before leaving midway through the campaign. Wickham is one of four players leaving Cardiff, along with Dillon Phillips, Gavin Whyte and Tom Sang.

A club statement said: "We'd like to thank all of the departing players for their efforts while with our football club, and wish them all the very best for the future."

Speaking to the EFL last year, Wickham spoke about how injuries have affected his career.

He said: "You can’t predict injuries and you never know how your career is going to pan out, but I wouldn’t change anything I’ve done. I’m proud of the career I’ve had and I still feel like I can potentially have another seven or eight years. I’ve still got the quality and the hunger to play at the highest level, I just need to get fit and show it.”

His time at Sunderland didn't particularly go to plan, with 11 goals in 79 appearances in red-and-white. He was loaned out to Sheffield Wednesday and Leeds United during his spell on Wearside, before joining Crystal Palace in 2015.
