Former Sunderland loanee named in England U19s squad for European Championships

Former Sunderland loanee Callum Doyle has been named in the England Under-19 squad for the European Under-19 Championship in Slovakia. Doyle, who has now returned to parent club Manchester City, played a key role in the Three Lions’ qualification, featuring in five of their six matches.

After making 44 appearances in all competitions for Sunderland last season, Doyle is among the most experienced players in Ian Foster’s squad. He helped the Black Cats win promotion back to the Championship at the fourth time of asking with a 2-0 win over Wycombe Wanderers in the play-off final at Wembley.

The tournament got underway on Saturday and England play their first match this evening, as they face Austria. Serbia and Israel are the Young Lions’ other two opponents in the group, and those fixtures will take place on Wednesday and Saturday respectively.

England will harness ambitions of progressing far in this competition, which only consists of eight nations in total, with France, Italy, Romania and Slovakia making up the other group. All of England’s group matches are set to get underway at 7:00pm BST and will be shown live on BBC iPlayer.

Goalkeepers: Matthew Cox (Brentford), Harvey Davies (Liverpool) & Teddy Sharman-Lowe (Chelsea).

Defenders: Luke Chambers (Liverpool), Callum Doyle (Manchester City), Ronnie Edwards (Peterborough United), Bashir Humphreys (Chelsea), Brooke Norton-Cuffy (Arsenal), Daniel Oyegoke (Brentford) & Jarell Quansah (Liverpool).

Midfielders: Carney Chukwuemeka (Aston Villa), Alfie Devine (Tottenham Hotspur), Jamie Bynoe-Gittens (Borussia Dortmund), Sam Iling-Junior (Juventus), Tim Iroegbunam (Aston Villa), Aaron Ramsey (Aston Villa), Alex Scott (Bristol City) & Harvey Vale (Chelsea).

Strikers: Liam Delap (Manchester City), Daniel Jebbison (Sheffield United) & Dane Scarlett (Tottenham Hotspur).
