Former Sri Lanka international cricketer facing match-fixing charges slapped travel ban

NEW DELHI: In a significant development, former Sri Lankan cricket player Sachithra Senanayake, facing charges related to match-fixing, has encountered a travel restriction imposed by a local Colombo court on Monday.

Senanayake, 38 years old, who participated in a single Test match, 49 ODIs, and 24 T20 Internationals during his cricket career from 2012 to 2016, stands accused of attempting to manipulate games during the 2020 Lanka Premier League.

The allegations assert that he used telephone communication to influence two players towards match-fixing.

The Colombo Chief Magistrate's Court has issued a directive, mandating the Controller General of Immigration and Emigration, to enforce a travel ban on Senanayake, which is set to remain in effect for a period of three months. This court order stems from a request by the Attorney General's Department.

It was revealed during the court proceedings that the Special Investigation Unit of the Sports Ministry had instructed the Attorney General's Department to formulate criminal charges against the former off-spinner.

This development underscores the growing seriousness with which authorities are addressing match-fixing concerns within the realm of cricket.
