Former SNP treasurer who quit over party finances not told about £110,000 campervan

A former SNP treasurer who spoke out about party finances was reportedly not told about the purchase of a £110,000 caravan on the party accounts.

Douglas Chapman was not informed by then chief executive Peter Murrell about the expensive vehicle during his time in the role.

Colin Beattie, who served as treasurer either side of Chapman, had already said that he only found out about the campervan through the SNP's 2021 accounts.

The vehicle was seized by police from the home of Peter Murrell's mother last month.

Murrell is married to former leader Nicola Sturgeon and resigned as the party's chief executive earlier this year.

He was arrested in April as part of the investigation into party finances. He was released after 11 hours of questioning without charge.

Beattie was also arrested and released without charge as part of the investigation.

A source close to Chapman told The Times: "Douglas did not know about [the campervan] when he was treasurer."

Chapman served as party treasurer between December 2020 and May 2021. When he quit he claimed he "had not received the support or financial information required to carry out the fiduciary duties of National Treasurer."

An SNP source told the Record last month that the campervan was bought for campaigning during the 2021 election.

This means it is possible that it was bought while Chapman was treasurer. The timing of the purchase was unclear.

Murrell's mother's neighbours said the vehicle was delivered to the Dunfermline home in January 2021.

Chapman has so far declined to comment about the investigation.

An SNP spokesman said: "These issues are subject to a live police investigation. The SNP have been co-operating fully with this investigation and will continue to do so. However, it is not appropriate to publicly address these issues while that investigation is ongoing."
