Former SNP MP reveals appalling racist abuse as she says farewell to Westminster

A FORMER SNP MP has said she “won’t miss the abuse of public life” as she shared shocking racist comments directed at her.

Anum Qaisar, who lost her Airdrie and Shotts seat to Labour at the election, made an emotional intervention on social media after clearing out her Westminster office.

The former MP took to Instagram to share a photo of an SNP survey card on which someone had written: “I see your [sic] another scumbag foreign P*ki b*stard”.

In a caption, she wrote: “To have served the people of Airdrie and Shotts has been an honour and privilege, and I’m now looking forward to spending time with family and friends.

“I won’t miss the abuse of public life, but one thing is for sure - you haven’t seen the last of Anum Qaisar.”

Speaking in 2021, Qaisar told the Commons of similar racist abuse she had received and accused the Tory government of encouraging bigotry.

She said: “On social media I’ve been told that I shouldn’t be involved in politics because I’m not a Brit, I’m a P*ki. That is, of course, wrong on both accounts. I’m neither a Brit nor a P*ki, I’m a proud Scot.”

Qaisar was born to a Scottish-Pakistani family and was formerly the general secretary of Muslim Friends of Labour before she became an independence supporter and joined the SNP.

She worked as a teacher at George Watson’s College in Edinburgh before she became a politician.
