Former school site in to be transformed as new South Ayrshire Council housing project begins

Diggers are ready to move in at South Ayrshire Council's biggest housing project in recent years.

A total of 160 new affordable homes are to be built on the site of the former Mainholm Academy in Ayr.

A mix of one, two, three, four, five and six-bedroom properties will be constructed by Prestwick-based Ashleigh (Scotland) Ltd.

The new homes will be available to rent and be energy efficient, and some will be modified to ensure they have full wheelchair access.

The final green light to begin works follows the transfer of the land to the Council’s Housing Revenue Account, paving the way for the new development.

The council will work alongside hub South West Scotland Ltd to deliver the new housing project, which saw a sod cutting ceremony take place this week to mark the start of official works.

Councillor Martin Kilbride, housing spokesman at the council, said: “This new development will significantly boost the number of quality affordable homes we have in South Ayrshire.

"This is not just about bricks and mortar; it’s about building communities and housing which meets the needs of our tenants.”

The development is due for completion in 2025.

Michael Ross, Chief Executive at hub South West Scotland, said: “This event marks a significant milestone in the development and delivery of this exciting new housing development for Ayr.

"We enjoy a close and productive working relationship with South Ayrshire Council for whom we have delivered 14 crucial infrastructure projects across the authority to date across education, leisure and housing developments.

“This relationship is something we are committed to continuing, not only with the council but with the wider community who will benefit from this development.

"We look forward to starting work on this affordable housing project with the support of our delivery partner, Ashleigh (Scotland) Ltd and the local supply chain partners.”

David Smith, Managing Director of Ashleigh (Scotland) Ltd, added: "We are delighted to commence construction works on this fantastic new development.

"It will provide many wider role opportunities that will directly benefit the community, and we look forward to working with hub South West Scotland and South Ayrshire Council on the successful delivery of these units."
