Former Saints QB signs with Lions, reuniting with several old coaches and teammates

Hey, good for Teddy Bridgewater. The former New Orleans Saints quarterback signed with the Detroit Lions on Monday, reuniting with several  of his old coaches and teammates. Lions head coach Dan Campbell, the former Saints’ tight ends coach, talked up Bridgewater as an important addition to their team.

He’ll be competing against familiar faces like linebacker Alex Anzalone and safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson in training camp, and there’s a non-zero chance Bridgewater is starting for Detroit when they visit New Orleans in the winter (for a Week 13 game on Dec. 3). Rookie draft pick Hendon Hooker was selected to back up Jared Goff, but he opened Lions camp on the NFI list while he continues to recover from last year’s knee injury.

If anything happens to Goff, Bridgewater is likely the starter. A lot of Saints fans are rooting against Goff after his recent comments reopened old wounds following the 2018 NFC championship game no-call.

Bridgewater found success as an efficient game-manager for the Saints in his five-game run as a starter in relief of Drew Brees (winning all five of his starts), but he’s struggled to replicate it. The Lions will be his fourth team in four years and he’s gone a combined 11-20 while starting for the Carolina Panthers, Denver Broncos, and Miami Dolphins since leaving New Orleans. Good luck to him in Detroit.
