Former Saints favourite Stephen McGinn joins stars in the club's Hall of Fame

By Kyle Gunn

Former St Mirren skipper Stephen McGinn is the latest legend to be inducted into clubs Hall of Fame.

McGinn made his Buddies debut in 2007 after coming through the ranks as a youth at the club, with his sensational winner against Rangers a year later being a standout moment.

The midfielder also notched in a 1-1 draw away to Celtic Park in the same year before moving to Watford in 2010.

But a serious knee injury kept him out for a year and he had a loan spell at Shrewsbury Town, before spending time Sheffield United, Dundee and Wycombe Wanderers.

Now with Kilmarnock, McGinn made an emotional return to Paisley in 2017 and was immediately installed as captain by his former Saints teammate Jack Ross as the club staved off relegation to League One on the final day of the season.

As if that wasn’t enough, the 33-year-old captained the side back to the Scottish Premiership 12 months later to cap an incredible turnaround for the club in the space of 18 months.

After winning promotion, McGinn signed a two-year contract extension, helping the club to stay in the top flight before leaving the SMISA Stadium again in June 2020.

Speaking to stmirren.com, he said: “Over both my spells here I just loved my time and I’m really proud of the accolade.

“Both were totally different spells, but both I think of as big successes.”

McGinn joins John Sutton, Peter Godfrey and Billy Thomson in being inducted into the Hall of Fame on Sunday, May 1 at the Normandy Hotel, Renfrew, during the club’s prestigious Player of the Year awards dinner.
