The broadcaster married his second wife Paula, a well-known singer, two years ago.
Gareth, who is best known for his role presenting on Classic Hits FM on Saturdays despite having been diagnosed with a rare life-changing and incurable disease , Multiple System Atrophy (MSA), a neurodegenerative illness of which there is no cure, has previously credited his wife as being "his rock".
The radio presenter said that for about a year before his own diagnosis, he was fooling himself about the symptoms.
He recalled that it was in March 2015, he began feeling very low following the death of his good friend and fellow radio legend Tony Fenton .
He said: "But Paula was the first to suss that something was up. "
However, after finding out about Gareth's illness, Paula's health began to decline as the news took its toll on her too.
"Just last summer, Paula suffered a breakdown as a result of stress and it resulted in a stay in hospital."
