Former RTE presenter Gareth O'Callaghan to take time off radio show to recover after car accident

Classic Hits DJ Gareth O’Callaghan is set to miss his Saturday show after he and his family were involved in a car accident earlier this week.

The Dublin native's wife Paula explained to followers on Twitter that Gareth and their family "need time to recover" after the unfortunate accident which happened on Sunday. She wrote on Twitter: "Last Sunday Gareth, myself and my daughter were involved in a road crash.

“Gareth won’t be on air this Saturday morning. We all just need time to recover. Life is fleeting, make the most of each day, it can all be taken away in a moment."

Fans have flocked to social media to wish former RTE presenter Gareth and his family a speedy recovery after their accident. One person wrote on Twitter: "Genuinely shocked to hear this after everything else ye have been through recently!! Hold each other close, work can wait.”

A second added: "I hope you are alright, enjoy the weekend and hopefully he will be back on the air next weekend, or whenever he feels up to it." A third person commented: "Wishing Gareth and his family a speedy recovery. God bless."

The ex-RTE presenter previously had to undergo two operations surgeries on his hands after a freak bin accident over the Christmas holidays. Gareth was bringing the bin out at his home when the bin slipped and his fingers got caught around the handle, and his wife Paula explained that his fingers were “in a very bad way" and he had to have two surgeries.

Gareth had returned to work at Classic Hits FM just over a month ago in the wake of his surgeries on his hands. The Dublin native has also openly talked about living with multiple system atrophy (MSA) which he was diagnosed with in 2018.

MSA is a rare and degenerative neurological disorder that impacts involuntary functions like blood pressure, the ability to breathe, the bladder function and motor control.
