Former Rangers star Neil Alexander 'closing in' on key role at Premiership club

Former Rangers keeper Neil Alexander is closing in on a return to the Scottish Premiership, according to a report.

The Daily Record claim the ex-Hearts and Scotland international is set to take up the role of goalkeeping coach at Motherwell as Steven Hammell adds to his backroom team after landing the top job at Fir Park.

Alexander held a similar position at league rivals Dundee United but left abruptly last season. Now, he is set for a fresh challenge in Lanarkshire and will get down to work with the likes of Liam Kelly and Aston Oxborough. Scott Fox had been taking the goalkeeping duties but he left on a deadline day loan to Queen of the South. New boss Hammell has got off to a solid start in the Motherwell dugout with his troops sitting fifth in the league standings on ten points and through to the Premier Sports Cup quarter-final stage.

They drew last time out against Dundee United with the Fir Park gaffer disappointed his troops didn't walk away with all three points.

He said: "I thought we looked a threat, we kept possession and I enjoyed watching us play and what we were doing. I think the players did as well, but would I rather have played not so well and won 1-0? Yes I would have.

"I'm not getting carried away, because we've drawn 0-0, but the players need to enjoy it and there needs to be an element of entertainment in what we are trying to do.

"We've got a little bit of responsibility to the people that come and watch us to actually enjoy watching us play.

"I've been here a lot of years and I know that isn't always the case but we need to try and do that. I felt we did that today, but the overriding feeling is just disappointment that we didn't manage to win the game."
