Former Rangers star Charlie Adam confirms return to football as he links up with Vincent Kompany

Former Rangers midfielder Charlie Adam has returned to football in a loans manager role at English Championship side Burnley.

The former Liverpool star hung up the boots following a spell at Dundee over the last two seasons and has been carefully pondering his next move. He has participated in some work with West Ham United while he has even tried his hand at media work over in Malaysia. Primarily though, ex-Ibrox man Adam has been involved in helping out at Vincent Kompany's side who are pushing for a return to the Premier League.

His involvement has been with the development squad throughout this season, assisting Andy Farrell with the aspiring Clarets youngsters. The pair have been handed the reigns this term with ex-leader Mike Jackson remaining with the first-team under Kompany, having guided Burnley towards the end of last season following the sacking of Sean Dyche. Adam is joining on a full-time basis.

He began his playing days at Rangers and former part of the side that went to the UEFA Cup final in 2008 under Walter Smith's management.

A succesful career was forged in England where he played for Blackpool, Liverpool, Stoke City and Reading before moving to Dundee.

Adam said of his retirement: "I've been lucky enough to play for some of the biggest clubs in the world, from Champions League nights at Ibrox for Rangers, winning promotion into the Premier League as Blackpool captain, pulling on the famous Liverpool shirt and scoring in front of the Kop, eight incredible seasons at Stoke City to guiding my boyhood club to promotion and playing 25 times for Scotland - it's not been a bad ride."
