Former Rangers player handed first gig in management

Former Rangers player Aaron Ramsey has been handed his first gig in management.

The 34-year-old has been placed in temporary charge of Cardiff City's first team until the end of the season.

Following yesterday's 2-0 loss to promotion-chasing Sheffield United, the Welsh club decided to sack Omer Riza.

With only three games of the season left, Cardiff sit deep in relegation trouble. They occupy the second-bottom spot in the Championship.

However, they are just one point adrift from safety, with Derby County on 43 points, hovering just above Cardiff, Luton and Plymouth in the drop zone.

Ramsey will be tasked with trying to achieve safety for his boyhood club.

Cardiff's three games include two home fixtures against Oxford and West Brom, while they will end the campaign away at Norwich.

A club statement reads: "Cardiff City FC can confirm that a decision has been taken to relieve Omer Riza of his duties as First Team Manager.

"Aaron Ramsey will lead the Club for the remaining three games of the Sky Bet Championship season, beginning with Monday’s match at home to Oxford United.

"Chris Gunter, Joe Ralls, Tom Hutton, Matthew Bloxham and Gavin Ward will join Aaron in the technical area.

"We’d like to thank Omer for his passion and effort during his time as Cardiff City manager and wish him the very best for his next steps in the game."

Ramsey played on loan at Ibrox three years ago, when he joined the club on loan from Juventus on the final day of the January window in 2022.
