Charlie Telfer knows exactly what it takes to lift the SPFL Trust Trophy and reckons Airdrieonians should be setting their sights on claiming the silverware this season.
The midfielder took the crown with Dundee United in 2017 when he helped the Tangerines defeat St Mirren in the final at Fir Park, and on Friday night he will embark on his latest campaign in the competition when Airdrie travel to Alloa Athletic in a third round tie.
Telfer is looking to earn his second outing for the Diamonds after making his debut in Saturday’s 5-0 thrashing of Clyde in League One and believes with the talent they have in their squad, they should be aiming high in the tournament.
He told Lanarkshire Live Sport : “I’ve won the competition before and it is something I really enjoy.
“Some people turn their noses up at the tournament but it is an opportunity to win silverware and I think we’ve got a good chance.
“I think we can beat anyone in it on our day with the way we play, especially at home.
“We’ve got a right good opportunity in this competition if we put in good performances so I think everyone will be looking forward to the game.
“It’s another opportunity for me to get some more minutes on Friday so I’m looking forward to it as well.
“We had a tough result the other week, losing 6-0 to FC Edinburgh, but we quickly got past that against Clyde and I think we can really push on now to have a successful season.”
The 27-year-old has linked up with his old Rangers team-mate Rhys McCabe at New Broomfield, with the pair reunited eight years on from their Ibrox youth days.
Player-boss McCabe brought Telfer in for a trial period in the summer and he eventually signed up the ex-Falkirk man on a season-long deal earlier this month.
Telfer added: “We had some conversations when I was first here training in the summer and we were both open and honest about what we both wanted.
“Rhys is a wee bit older than me but we’d been at Rangers together and I knew him when we broke into the first team.
“There is a mutual respect there and what he is doing here at Airdrie, how he wants to play, was a real pull for me.
“I’m just delighted to be here and it was nice to get that debut last week.”
Friday’s match is a 7.45pm kick-off at the Indodrill.
