Former Rangers kid set for new challenge, joins Hamburg on loan

Scotland Under-21s forward Dire Mebude has been loaned to German second-tier side Hamburg, with the club holding an option to make the move permanent.

The 20-year-old, who has earned nine caps for Scotland Under-21s under manager Scot Gemmill, has been plying his trade with Belgian side Westerlo but will now take on a new challenge in the German 2. Bundesliga.

Hamburg, currently leading the second division on goal difference, have secured the exciting young talent, with club sporting director and former German international Stefan Kuntz praising Mebude’s potential.

Kuntz said: "We see great development in Dire Mebude. He is explosive going forward and boasts great speed too.

"Dire is a player we think will complement us greatly."

After progressing through the youth ranks at both Rangers and Manchester City and then ending up in Belgium, Mebude has been loaned out to gain valuable first-team experience.

Last season, he spent time with Bristol City, and this term, he has already scored two goals in the Belgian Pro League.

Hamburg, with their eyes on promotion back to the top tier of German football, will be hoping Mebude’s pace and attacking flair will help them push to achieve such success.
