Former Rangers boss Graeme Murty has been appointed Lead Professional Development Phase Coach at Sunderland. The 47-year-old confirmed his appointment on his LinkedIn page after speculation in recent weeks.
Posting on his page, Murty said: "I'm happy to share that I'm starting a new position as Lead PDP Coach at Sunderland AFC." The former York City, Reading and Southampton defender has spent the majority of his coaching career north of the border in Scotland.
The ex-Scotland international began his coaching career with Southampton and then Norwich City before moving to Rangers in August 2016. Murty would play a prominent role in the development of young talent at Ibrox, and would take over the reins of the club for a brief stint in 2017-18.

Murty will work and collaborate with First team and PDP staff surrounding training support and teams elections for U21s and U18 squads. John Hewitson is currently in charge of the Under-21s side on an interim basis but the club is yet to provide an official statement on Murty's appointment and what this means for the current Sunderland coach.
The Black Cats U21s side suffered defeat at the hands of Nottingham Forest U21s last time out, with the Reds picking up their first win of the Premier League 2 Division 2 campaign.
