An astonishing 2000 former pupils of a doomed Ayr school have paid their last respects.
The Queen Margaret Academy building will shut in October when the new complex opens a hundred yards away.
An Open Day to say goodbye was packed to the rafters. And those old memories flooded back.
History teacher Sarah Martin said: “What a success it was, largely down to people reading the Ayrshire Post article as about 2000 people showed up.
“The exhibition of school memories drew a large crowd with awards, photographs and technology from days gone by which brought back many memories – an old over-head projector being one of them.”
The building opened in 1976 and visitors made a final pilgrimage from all over the UK and as far as Australia to reminisce about their life at QMA.
Sandra added: “There was even a reunion of class mates who hadn’t seen each other in 35 years.
“The old school lesson from 1976 went down really well.
"Most were fascinated with getting to play with the Lochgelly Tawes (belt) and the threat of me washing their mouths out with carbolic soap seemed to keep most in-line.
"We had hair raising and fire raising experiments and some got a bit carried away with the Bunsen Burners.
“Many people also loved the opportunity to dress up in school uniform and take photos with the QMA Facebook selfie board.
“The home baking from Mrs Lamont and refreshments from Mrs Weir provided a lovely finale.”
