Former President Donald Trump recently expressed his appreciation for the International Brotherhood of Teamsters' decision to refrain from endorsing a presidential candidate in the 2024 election. This move by the union, known for historically endorsing Democratic candidates, was deemed by Trump as 'a great honor.'
During a campaign event in New York City, Trump highlighted survey data released by the Teamsters leadership, revealing that approximately 60% of the union's members favored him over Vice President Kamala Harris.
Trump acknowledged the significance of the Teamsters' decision, noting that traditionally, the union has aligned with Democratic candidates. He emphasized the rarity of their non-endorsement, stating, 'Democrats automatically have the Teamsters.'
Referring to the high level of support he received from the Teamsters' members and leadership, Trump commended Sean O'Brien and the group for their stance. O'Brien, the union president, had notably spoken at the Republican National Convention in July, signaling a shift in the Teamsters' political engagement.
Despite the union's historical Democratic leanings, the Teamsters last endorsed a Republican presidential candidate in 1988, backing George H.W. Bush. Trump's recognition of the Teamsters' decision underscores the evolving dynamics within the labor movement.
However, Trump's relationship with the Teamsters has not been without criticism. Sean O'Brien previously voiced concerns over Trump's remarks during a virtual event with Elon Musk, which were perceived as unsupportive of striking workers.
