Former President Jimmy Carter's body will be brought to the U.S. Capitol on Tuesday afternoon, where he will lie in state for three days before a state funeral in Washington, D.C. Carter passed away last week on December 29 at the age of 100, following the death of his wife, Rosalynn Carter, just over a year ago.
Speaker Mike Johnson, along with other congressional leaders, announced last month that Carter would lie in state. In a letter to his son, James Carter III, they expressed their intention to honor President Carter's long and distinguished service to the nation by allowing his remains to lie in state in the Rotunda of the United States Capitol.
The ceremonial arrival of Carter's body at the Capitol Rotunda is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon. The event will include remarks from Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Majority Leader John Thune.
