Former President Jimmy Carter's active post-presidency extended to relationships with his seven White House successors, with some of them leaning on his experience, advice, and diplomatic abilities. Carter also used his platform to speak out against some presidents when he felt it was warranted.
President Joe Biden
President Joe Biden and first lady Dr. Jill Biden visited with Carter and former first lady Rosalynn Carter at their Plains, Georgia, home during an April 2021 trip to Atlanta for a rally marking Biden's 100th day in office. Biden mentioned that he was the first person to endorse Carter outside of Georgia and reminisced about the old days during their visit. The Carters did not attend Biden's inauguration due to the pandemic, but they reunited at the 2023 memorial service for Rosalynn Carter.
Donald Trump
Carter maintained communication with then-President Donald Trump during his presidency, offering to travel to North Korea on the administration's behalf and discussing US-China trade relations. However, their relationship soured when Carter called for an investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election. Trump later criticized Carter's presidency but acknowledged him as a 'nice man.'
President Barack Obama
In 2014, Carter revealed that President Barack Obama did not seek his advice, citing a sensitive area related to equal treatment between Palestinians and Israelis. Carter expressed disappointment that Obama did not reach out for counsel, highlighting that previous presidents had engaged with him and the Carter Center for action.
