Nearly 23,000 individuals gathered to pay their respects to former President Jimmy Carter as he lay in repose in his hometown of Plains, Georgia. Carter, who served as the 39th President of the United States, passed away at the age of 100 on December 29, 2024.
The public viewing of Carter's casket in Atlanta drew a significant number of visitors who came to honor his legacy and contributions to the country. The Carter Center expressed gratitude to the 22,950 individuals who took the time to pay their respects during this phase of the memorial services.
Following the closure of the repose in Georgia, Carter's body will be transported to Washington D.C. for additional memorial services at the U.S. Capitol and the National Cathedral. These services will provide an opportunity for dignitaries, officials, and the public to commemorate Carter's life and achievements.
After the memorials in the nation's capital, the Carter family will return to Georgia for a private service to bid a final farewell to the former president. Carter will be laid to rest next to his late wife, Rosalynn Carter, in a serene setting by a willow tree on their family property in Georgia.
