Funeral services honoring former President Jimmy Carter, who passed away at the age of 100, have been scheduled to take place in Georgia and Washington, D.C. The events are set to begin on Saturday, January 4, and conclude on Thursday, January 9.
Saturday, January 4
The state funeral will commence with the arrival of the Carter family at Phoebe Sumter Medical Center in Americus, Georgia, at 10:15 a.m. The motorcade will then proceed through Carter's hometown of Plains, Georgia, with a brief stop in front of his family's farm. The journey will continue to Atlanta, where a service will be held at the Carter Presidential Center.
Sunday, January 5 - Monday, January 6
Carter will continue to lie in repose during these days.
Tuesday, January 7
Carter's remains will be transported to Washington, D.C., with a ceremony at Joint Base Andrews, Maryland. A funeral procession to the U.S. Capitol will follow, where he will lie in state for public viewing.
Wednesday, January 8
Carter will remain in state at the U.S. Capitol.
Thursday, January 9
The funeral procession will travel to Washington National Cathedral for the National Funeral Service. Following the service, Carter's family will return to Georgia for a private funeral service and interment at Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains.
The public is invited to line the motorcade route through Plains to pay their respects. A missing man formation flyover by the U.S. Navy will honor Carter's naval service and time as commander-in-chief.
