The Carter Center expressed gratitude on Monday to the state of Georgia and beyond for the outpouring of tributes honoring former President Jimmy Carter as he lay in repose in his home state. Mourners gathered to pay their respects before Carter's casket, prompting the Carter Center to extend their thanks to all who showed their support.
Following the period of remembrance in Georgia, the former president's body will be transported to Washington D.C. for additional memorials on Capitol Hill. A departure ceremony is scheduled to take place at the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library before Carter's remains are moved to the airport for the journey to the nation's capital.
