Former Premier League star poses 'bigger club' question amid Newcastle United-Everton debate

Former Premier League midfielder Danny Murphy has questioned whether or not Newcastle United are a 'bigger club' than Everton, despite the current state of both clubs.

The Toffees owner Farhad Moshiri has put the club up for sale this week after sacking manager Frank Lampard, less than a year after the former Chelsea and Derby County boss' appointment.

Eddie Howe, on the other hand, has managed to get his Magpies flying up the Premier League table so far this season, with many comparing the state of the two sides on social media this week, leading some to discuss who is 'the bigger club'.

"The interpretation of what you define as a 'big club' is what I think is key in this," Murphy said earlier this afternoon on talkSPORT. "I think after listening to Simon [Jordan]'s comments, they're not crazy comments.

"I'd probably make Everton and Newcastle relatively equal on how I judge what a big club is. You're filling stadiums every week, your away fanbase, and how much passion there is.

"History does go a long way, Everton's history is bigger. But in terms of right now, which is the bigger club... I think they're pretty equal.

"Newcastle at the moment are a train going in the right direction, [as a player nowadays] you'd go to Newcastle all day. Everton could be in the Championship next season, Newcastle could be in the Champions League. But when I was playing, Newcastle or Everton? I would've gone Everton."
