A popular pub in Sunderland that closed down could be transformed into a restaurant if plans are approved.
The Davy Lamp pub off Brick Garth in Easington Lane, Houghton-le-Spring, closed and the vendor put the business up for sale earlier this year. The property, which had a pub on the ground floor and a three-bedroom flat on the first floor, was sold vacant.
Sunderland City Council's planning department received a planning bid for the pub in June to change the use of the ground floor bar to a restaurant and keep the first floor in residential use. Plans also include installing a new flue to the flat roof/rear elevation.

In the proposed plans the restaurant would have a small waiting area by the bar followed by a seating area that has the capacity for 50 diners. Meanwhile, the kitchen area as well as male, female and disabled toilets would be positioned towards the back of the restaurant.
Ventilation and filtration equipment would also be installed to "suppress and disperse" fumes and/or smells created from cooking in the kitchen area. The plans also say that installed machinery and equipment would be enclosed to reduce noise impacts on nearby properties.
However, these plans must be approved before they can go ahead following a period of council consultation. Sunderland City Council's website lists the deadline for determining the planning application as September 26, 2022.
