A former policeman has revealed he probed 104 wild claims about Princess Diana’s death – and disproved every one of them.
Dave Douglas led an investigation into conspiracy theories about the Paris car crash in which Diana, her partner Dodi Fayed and driver Henri Paul died 25 years ago.
Many were aimed at the Royal family and included claims that the late Prince Philip and Diana’s former husband Prince Charles were involved.
Others blamed MI6, MI5 and the SAS.
But in a rare interview, Dave said he and his team of 12 combed through all the evidence to reach the conclusion in 2006 that it was a “tragic accident”.
He said: “We investigated every conspiracy. We wanted transparency. There were around 104 different conspiracy allegations. We listed them all and went through each one. We came up with a conclusion for all of them.”
Dave, 65, is still challenged about those conclusions. He said: “People struggle to accept tragic accidents. They need reasons for things to happen. Conspiracies are sexier.
“What we did was boring by going through everything bit by bit.”
As part of the probe, codenamed Operation Paget, Dave – now a private security consultant – once interviewed Prince Charles at St James’ Palace.
He said the experience was “weird”, but the prince was “nice”.
Dave features in the first episode of Investigating Diana: Death in Paris, on Channel 4 tomorrow night at 9pm.
