A former employee of the Phoenix Suns has filed a lawsuit against the team, alleging racial discrimination, unlawful retaliation, and misconduct within the organization. The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in Arizona, claims that Andrea Trischan, the team's former manager of diversity, equity, and inclusion, was wrongfully terminated after working for the Suns for about 10 months.
The lawsuit also alleges instances of potential financial misconduct and sexual misconduct by team employees. Trischan's lawyer stated that there is substantial evidence of a pattern of discrimination within the Suns organization.
Trischan was hired in 2022 following former owner Robert Sarver's suspension and fine for workplace misconduct. Sarver later sold the team to Mat Ishbia for approximately $4 billion. After her termination in 2023, Trischan filed complaints with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and the Arizona Attorney General’s Office’s civil rights division, which were reportedly dismissed.
The Suns and Mercury Senior Vice President of Communications stated that Trischan's claims have been without merit and that her lawsuit seeking $60 million is based on dismissed claims. The organization expressed confidence that the courts will find her story to be fabricated.
Trischan's lawyer emphasized her client's commitment to seeking justice through the legal system rather than relying on government entities with limited resources. Trischan is prepared to present her evidence to a jury to support her case.
The lawsuit highlights ongoing challenges related to workplace discrimination and misconduct within professional sports organizations. The case is expected to proceed through the legal system as Trischan seeks to address the alleged injustices she experienced during her tenure with the Phoenix Suns.
