Former Partick Thistle and Hamilton star has offer on the table for Albion Rovers stay

Albion Rovers boss Brian Reid remains hopeful he can convince midfielder Charlie Reilly to stay on at Cliftonhill a little longer.

The 20-year-old was one of Rovers' standout performers last season as he made 36 appearances and netted seven goals, but he has yet to commit his future to the club for a second season.

Reilly made his breakthrough at Hamilton Accies and spells at Airdrie on loan and Partick Thistle followed before Reid signed him for the Monklands men last summer.

An offer is on the table for him and Reid reckons it would be good for his development to soak up another season as a regular first-team player.

He said: "We'd love to get Charlie back. He was a big player for us next season.

"Charlie's future will eventually be bigger and better than Albion Rovers, but another season here wouldn't do him any harm - or even if it is half a season, come in and do well, then earn a move.

"But we are working on that daily.

"There's an offer out for him and we want to keep him at the club.

"People forget Charlie is still only 20. He's still a young guy and last season was probably the first time he's played 30-odd games in a season.

"When you are a young guy that's what you need.

"You need to get that experience, establish yourself and get games under your belt to kick on.

"There's big games coming up in the Premier Sports Cup that if he does do well, we wouldn't stand in the boys' way of moving on at some point.

"But we'd like to keep him as long as we can.

"Hopefully he does sign."

Reid's side returned for pre-season training on Saturday as new boys Michael Paton, Kyle Fleming and Aytron Sonkur met their team-mates for the first time.

And the squad was also boosted by midfielder Blair Malcolm and striker Max Wright signing up for another campaign, as striker Declan Byrne decided his future lies elsewhere.

Reid added: "It was a good day on Saturday, the boys came back in relatively good shape and I was pleased with how it went.

"We got a good bit of work done and it was our first chance to look at the new signings, who all fitted in well.

"We've had three good additions so far and we will have one in who has agreed to sign for this week.

"We are working our way through others as well because we are still a bit short.

"But Max Wright and Blair Malcolm have both agreed new contracts so that's two more additions to the squad.

"They are good, experienced players to have around and we are delighted with that."
