Add another subplot to the Green Bay Packers’ Week 1 showdown with the Chicago Bears: tight end Marcedes Lewis, who played the last five seasons with the Packers, is signing with the Bears, per Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.
Lewis, who turned 39 years old in May, is entering his 18th NFL season, a record for the tight end position. He[‘ll break the record wearing the uniform of the Packers’ top rival.
Signed by the Packers in 2018, Lewis spent five years in Green Bay, serving mostly as a valuable in-line blocking tight end. He played in 81 games for the Packers, catching 57 passes for 582 yards and six touchdowns and consistently grading out as one of the NFL’s best blocking tight ends.
Lewis will join former Packers tight end Robert Tonyan, former Packers guard Lucas Patrick, former Packers receiver Equanimeous St. Brown and former Packers assistant coach Luke Getsy in Chicago.
The Packers moved on at tight end this offseason, allowing Tonyan to sign with the Bears and then selecting Luke Musgrave and Tucker Kraft in the first three rounds of the 2023 draft. While Musgrave and Kraft attempt to get on the same page with first-year starter Jordan Love, Tonyan and Lewis will be together again and playing in Justin Fields’ Bears offense.
The Packers and Bears kick off the 2023 regular season at Soldier Field on Sunday, Sept. 10.
