Former Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud detailed the absolutely bizarre way some Buckeye fans got his virtual attention as he avoided social media this past football season.
While talking with sports personality Jim Rome, the probable first-round draft pick shed light on how he dealt with outside noise while leading one of the best college football programs in the country.
As one could guess, the starting quarterback of a major college football team could get plenty of frustration thrown their way when things aren’t going well.
It got to the point that fans were somehow sending direct messages into Stroud’s Venmo account.
“I was getting DMs on Venmo, the money app,” Stroud recalled to Rome in the interview. “Fans [were] telling me, ‘play better,’ things like that. … At the end of the day, it comes with the territory.”
It’s a startling admission from Stroud as how the age of app communication has made just about anyone reachable in some way, shape or form. However, sliding into a college quarterback’s DMs on any social media account, much less Venmo, just feels just beyond the pale for any reason.
Stroud will undoubtedly face plenty of pushback as he embarks on his professional football career, but let’s hope the fans of his future NFL team will leave him alone on the apps where he’s not expecting them.
