Former Nottingham Forest striker ‘approached’ by Derby County about summer transfer

Nottingham Forest’s East Midlands rivals Derby County are reportedly making a summer move for former Reds’ striker David McGoldrick.

The Rams are in the process of rebuilding their squad after officially exiting administration this week. Just 24 hours after a takeover of the club was completed they announced the signings of three new players in Tom Barkhuzen, Joe Wildsmith and Nathaniel Mendez Laing.

The exit from administration means that Derby are now able to sign players as long as they are in accordance with a business plan sanctioned by the EFL. Therefore, they are able to sign free agents, of which all three new arrivals are.

Another free agent they are now said to be targeting is McGoldrick, who is available on a free transfer after the expiry of his contract at Sheffield United at the end of the season. The Sun journalist Alan Nixon claims that the Rams have ‘approached’ the striker about a possible summer move to Pride Park.

McGoldrick spent four years at Forest, making 73 appearances for the club and scoring nine goals between the years of 2009 and 2013. His final two years were spent away from the City Ground on various loan spells with Sheffield Wednesday, Coventry City and Ipswich Town.

The 34-year-old joined Ipswich on a permanent deal after leaving Forest before leaving to join Sheffield United in the summer of 2018. McGoldrick started his career at Southampton and had various loan spells before moving to Forest.

If the striker does move to Pride Park he will be playing back in League One next season after the Rams’ relegation from the Championship at the end of the 2021/22 campaign. He last played in League One in his loan spell with Coventry in 2012/13, where he scored 16 goals in 22 appearances for the Sky Blues.
