Former north London rabbi found with 1,694 'horrific' child abuse images sentenced

A former north London rabbi found with hundreds of “horrific” child abuse images has been handed a suspended jail sentence.

Yuval Keren, 56, was handed a 20 month jail sentence suspended for two years at Amersham Crown Court on Wednesday after the National Crime Agency found 1,694 indecent images of children on devices at his Pinner home in July 2022.

Of those, 189 images were rated as Category A, the most extreme type of child abuse images.

Keren, previously a rabbi at Southgate Progressive Synagogue, had images dating back to 2010, suggesting he accessed them for thirteen years, officers said.

Holly Triggs, NCA Operations Manager, said: “Yuval Keren had accessed images showing the horrific abuse of children for over 10 years.

“The NCA is committed to protecting children and ensuring that individuals who collect this material, and create a demand for abuse content, are held to account.”

The offending came to after light online storage provider Dropbox tipped off police that a user was uploading suspicious images on their platform.

Keren was suspended from his position immediately upon his arrest and no longer holds a position within the Liberal Judaism faith.

He pleaded guilty to all charges on October 11.

Alongside the suspended jail sentence, he was handed 40 hours rehabilitation, 180 hours unpaid work, 10 years on the Sex Offenders Register and a 5 year Sexual Harm Prevention Order.
