Former NFL Player Steve Gleason Honored With Arthur Ashe Award

Patrick Mahomes looks happy

Former NFL player Steve Gleason was honored with the Arthur Ashe Award for Courage at the 2024 ESPY Awards on Thursday. Gleason, a former New Orleans Saints safety, has been battling amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) since his diagnosis in 2011. The 47-year-old received a standing ovation as he was wheeled on stage at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, introduced by former teammate Drew Brees.

Gleason expressed his gratitude for the award, calling it a 'sublime honor' and reflecting on the meaning of courage. He shared his personal journey with ALS, emphasizing the importance of support from family, community, and caregivers in his battle against the disease.

In a powerful speech, Gleason highlighted the universal nature of fear and adversity, stating that no one is immune to these challenges. He encouraged empathy and understanding, emphasizing the collective responsibility to alleviate each other's suffering.

South Carolina women's basketball head coach Dawn Staley was also recognized at the ESPY Awards, receiving the Jimmy V Award for Perseverance. Staley, who led her team to a national championship and a perfect season, spoke about the power of making a difference and standing up for what is right.

WNBA star Caitlin Clark and NFL quarterback Patrick Mahomes were among the other notable winners of the night, receiving awards for their athletic achievements. The event concluded with the South Carolina women's basketball team being honored with the Best Team award.
