Former NFL defensive back Cameron Sutton has surrendered to authorities in Tampa, Florida, putting an end to a weeks-long search for him in connection with a domestic violence warrant. The 29-year-old arrived at a jail in Tampa on Sunday night, following his attorney's notification to law enforcement that he would turn himself in.
Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister expressed relief that Sutton had made the decision to surrender after evading law enforcement for weeks. The sheriff emphasized that domestic violence has no place in the community and that everyone is subject to the law in Hillsborough County.
Sutton was wanted for domestic battery by strangulation, a third-degree felony that carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison. The warrant stemmed from an incident on March 7 when the sheriff's department responded to a call about domestic violence involving Sutton and a female.
The Detroit Lions, Sutton's former team, became aware of the warrant through social media and subsequently released him from his contract. Sutton had signed a three-year, $33 million deal with the Lions a year prior and had been a key player in their recent successes, including a division title and playoff victories.
Prior to his time with the Lions, Sutton had a successful stint with the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he started in 31 games and recorded nine interceptions over his career. The Steelers had drafted Sutton in the third round in 2017, and he had been a consistent performer for the team.
As Sutton faces legal proceedings related to the domestic violence allegations, the NFL community and fans await further developments in the case.
