An American billionaire previously linked with a £350m takeover bid of Newcastle United is now reportedly in talks to buy Sheffield United. The EFL are said to be reviewing a £115m proposal from media tycoon Henry Mauriss to acquire the Blades, according to the Athletic.
Mauriss was namechecked as a potential buyer for the Magpies in 2020 as Mike Ashley's deal with the consortium backed by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund hit a lengthy impasse. The Clear TV CEO reportedly reached a £350m agreement, only to frustrate the former Toon owner over the slow pace of the takeover attempt.
However, Mauriss could be set to enter English football two years later subject to the EFL owners' and directors' tests. Sheffield United are currently owned by Saudi Arabia's Prince Abdullah bin Mosaad bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud, who secured full control of the club in 2019 following a court battle with fellow owner Kevin McCabe.
Speaking at the time of the Magpies approach, a source told the Daily Mirror : "[Mauriss is] a charitable and honourable man – and is desperate to become Newcastle’s new owner. It’s a genuine bid.
"He’s a successful player in the media world in America and has a big interest in English football." The Athletic report Sheffield United have declined to comment on the development, while the EFL and Mauriss have both been approached for comment.
