Former Newcastle striker Duncan Ferguson buys Everton fans drinks ahead of Aston Villa clash

Former Newcastle striker Duncan Ferguson endeared himself further to Everton fans by buying supporters drinks ahead of their home clash with Aston Villa.

Ex-Toffees striker took over the reins at Goodison Park on a temporary basis for the second time following the departure of Rafa Benitez, who was sacked after a 2-1 defeat to Norwich.

Ferguson, who spent two years on Tyneside in the mid-90s, was tasked with steadying the ship after Marco Silva’s exit in 2019 and has been given the same job to do this time around by Everton supremo Farhad Moshiri.

The blue half of Merseyside holds a special place in the Scotsman’s heart, with Ferguson calling Everton his ‘second home’ after two successful spells as a player.

Ahead of his first test as caretaker boss, the Winslow Hotel - situated a stone’s throw away from the stadium - tweeted their gratitude to Ferguson, who paid for every fan to have a drink before the game.

@WinslowHotel: “Massive big thanks to the legend that is Duncan Ferguson for buying all our customers their first drink this morning. Amazing generous gesture, that's a measure of the man. COYB.”

Unfortunately for ‘Big Dunc’, his opening game ended in defeat as Emi Buendia’s 45th-minute strike proved the difference between the two sides and earned Steven Gerrard his first win at Goodison Park as a manager.

Everton remain just five points clear of the relegation zone - with a trip to Newcastle on February 8 to come.
