Former Newcastle boss Steve McClaren set for Manchester United return as Erik ten Hag 'wins battle'

New Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag looks set to win his battle to appoint his friend and former Newcastle United boss Steve McClaren and Mitchell van der Gaag as his assistants at Old Trafford, according to reports. The Telegraph claims McClaren and ten Hag - who worked together at FC Twente - are set to be reunited with the Red Devils.

The former Newcastle United boss has been out of a coaching role since leaving Queens Park Rangers in 2019. McClaren took up the role of technical director at Derby County but left the role when the Rams entered administration in 2020.

Ten Hag is set to take over at Man United this summer at the end of the season, bringing Ralf Rangnick's tenure as interim head coach to a close before moving upstairs. McClaren and the soon to be Manchester United boss met at FC Twente in the Netherlands in 2008 when Ten Hag was the assistant to the English manager in his first season, before leaving for PSV Eindhoven.

McClaren was part of the coaching staff during the treble winning season in 1999 before leaving to pursue his own managerial career with Middlesbrough in 2001. The Manchester United hierarchy are understood to support the move given his experience of the Premier League.
