Former New England Patriots player Malik Gant dies aged 25 as family pay tribute

Former New England Patriots player Malik Gant has died at the age of 25, his family have confirmed.

Gant was found dead on May 25 in Miami, just four days before he was due to turn 26 years old. A cause of death has not yet been revealed.

The former Patriots star was signed as an undrafted free agent in 2019, but spent the large part of his debut season in New England on the injury reserve list. The former NFL defensive back would leave Foxboro in July 2020 before re-signing a year later.

His second spell with the Patriots would last just 14 days, though, as the AFC East team waived him before the start of the 2021 season. He has not played football since 2022, where he won a United States Football League Championship with the Birmingham Stallions.

Gant also went to Marshall University, where he spent three years from 2015-18 playing for the college’s football team. And a statement was released by Sirraya Gant, on behalf of the family.

“It is with heavy hearts that we announce the death of our beloved family member, Malik Gant,” the statement from the Gant family read. “Malik was found deceased on May 25, 2023, in Miami, Florida. We are devastated by this unimaginable loss and are grieving deeply.

"Malik was a remarkable individual who touched the lives of many with his kindness, charisma and unwavering spirit. He will be remembered as a loving son, a cherished brother, a devoted grandson, a valued teammate and a dear friend to countless individuals. His memory will live on in our hearts forever.

“During this difficult time, we would like to express our sincere gratitude for the outpouring of support, prayers, and condolences we are receiving from our community, friends and loved ones. Your kindness and compassion provide us with strength and comfort.

“Once again, we thank you for your support. Please keep Malik and our family in your thoughts and prayers as we navigate through this profound loss.”

Marshall University also released a statement expressing their sadness over Gant’s death “We are saddened to learn of the passing of former Marshall football player Malik Gant," Marshall's athletic department said in a statement.

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to his friends and family in this difficult time."
