A former Nebraska deputy is facing serious legal trouble after being indicted on suspicion of manslaughter in connection with a fatal shooting incident that occurred in October. Lancaster County Attorney Pat Condon revealed that former Seward County Deputy Anthony Gann has been charged and is currently in jail on a $100,000 bond. Gann is set to appear in court for the first time on Monday.
Seward County Sheriff Michael Vance confirmed that Gann has resigned from his position. An internal investigation conducted by the sheriff's office concluded that Gann did not violate any procedures.
The tragic event unfolded on October 23 when deputies attempted to stop 43-year-old Jorge Santana-Ramirez on Interstate 80. Instead of complying, Santana-Ramirez fled, driving in the wrong direction before eventually crossing into the correct lanes. The pursuit continued into Lancaster County, where Santana-Ramirez's passenger exited the vehicle, but the driver refused to surrender. Deputies reported seeing a weapon in Santana-Ramirez's hand, leading to the fatal shooting that resulted in his death at the scene.
